Hauser & Wirth Somerset is a world-class contemporary art gallery in a beautifully restored farm. This summer it’s home to Angel Otero’s Agua Salada exhibition (to 18 October), plus outdoor sculptures by Jeffrey Gibson, Jenny Holzer and Niki de Saint Phalle dotted through the gorgeous Piet Oudolf garden.

Museum of Somerset, Taunton

Set inside Taunton’s Norman castle, the Museum of Somerset is one of the best free days out in the county. See Somerset’s prehistoric past right through to the present day, with lots to keep curious kids occupied. This summer’s exhibition is From Spinning Tops to Spacehoppers, a brilliant nostalgic trip through toy history that genuinely delights children and adults alike.

Ham Hill Rebel Scarecrow Fest

Ham Hill’s Rebel Scarecrow Fest brings history to life at one of Somerset’s most dramatic landscapes. Discover the story of George Mitchell and the 1800s farm workers’ rallies through scarecrow-making, horse and cart rides, museum displays and performances from Stoke Performing Arts Group.
Cadbury Camp, Tickenham (free National Trust)
Price: FREE | Parking: Tickenham Village Hall, BS21 6RX | NT managed, no booking required
An Iron Age hill fort perched above Tickenham with commanding views across the Severn Estuary to the Severn Bridge and Sand Point. The National Trust manages the site and keeps entry completely free, which makes it a brilliant no-budget summer outing.
There are two circular walking routes to choose from: the Cadbury Ramble (2 miles, gentler) or the Cadbury Climb (2.5 miles, a bit more of a push). The ridge-top earthworks are genuinely impressive up close, and the children can scramble the banks while you take in the view. Wildlife-wise, keep an eye out for buzzards circling overhead, dragonflies in the damper hollows and, if you’re very lucky, grass snakes basking in the summer sun. Worth knowing: ticks are present in the long grass in summer.
Circus Daze, Italian Gardens, Weston-super-Mare

Get ready to run away with the circus this summer! Weston-super-Mare’s Italian Gardens will be bursting with physical creativity and high-flying fun as Circus Daze returns for a fantastic programme of drop-in circus activities throughout the school holidays.

Somerset FREE Summer Playdays
Free Summer Playdays are back this August, bringing a packed programme of creative activities, circus skills, crafts, music, face painting and outdoor theatre to locations across Somerset. All events are free to attend and run from 11am to 3pm, with children required to be accompanied by an adult.

Active Ilminster Day

Summer Holiday Play Sessions, The Boden Centre, Chard

Blake Gardens Takeover
Returning to Bridgwater on Saturday 1 August, 12pm-10pm, with a day of live music, festival food, a bar, free entertainment, movie cars and B.A.T.S. market stalls. Summer Fun on the Farm 2026: Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury
Set beneath the watchful gaze of Glastonbury Tor, Somerset Rural Life Museum occupies a postcard-perfect spot and is packed with summer holiday activities for all ages. A different activity runs every single day from 21 July to 4 September, from corn dolly-making and donkey rides to birds of prey and shire horses.

Clarks Village, Street
Clarks Village is more than an outlet shopping centre, it’s also home to King Arthur’s Forest a giant (Free) adventure play area. Zoom into summer at Clarks Village with the Lightning Loop junior racing track, open daily from 1 to 31 August 2026 (10:00am to 5:00pm). Perfect for ages 3 to 12, kids can drive mini F1 cars for £8 per session (or £6 via the free PLUS+ app).
Shoemakers Museum, Street
Shoemakers Museum is celebrating its first birthday with Sole Summer, a packed holiday programme of workshops, theatre and family events from 23 July to 2 September 2026. Highlights include a new footwear exhibition, mural making, pirate adventures, fossil sessions and a birthday bash with live entertainment. Medieval and Viking weekends, Glastonbury Abbey
On 25 to 26 July, Bowlore Medieval Weekend swoops into Glastonbury Abbey with archery shows, weaponry displays and choreographed combat. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a knight of old, have a go at sword school or test your aim with a bow in their medieval encampment between shows (£3 per go).

The Newt’s summer programme is packed with family adventures from 11 July to 31 August. Sweet Peas and Outdoor Theatre at Forde Abbey Gardens

The Portishead Summer Show is a two-day family show combining a traditional flower show with activities that promote local country life, nature and the environment. There’s also live music, food, drink, children’s activities, a dog show, a pig show (!), mobile farm, Punch and Judy, fun sports, fancy dress parade for kids under 10 and lots more!

The Somerset Steam and Country Show takes place at Low Ham, near Langport. ROAM Outdoors Mini ROAMers, near Ilminster
A woodland toddler session in a 10-acre private wood on the Dillington Estate near Ilminster. Mini ROAMers on Thursday 30 July 2026 lets little ones explore the woods, get muddy and enjoy a story based on the week’s theme.
Turbo Tots, Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford
Haynes Motor Museum’s Turbo Tots session on Monday 10 August 2026 is designed for younger budding petrolheads and their grown-ups, combining cars, creativity and hands-on activities.
Farmyard Fun, Somerset Rural Life Museum
Thursdays 23 July and 4 August 2026: meet animals from Second Chance Petting Farm and make an animal craft. The Museum Mouse trail (28 July, 4 and 11 August) is also a favourite with the under-5 crowd.
Animal Farm and Adventure Park, Burnham-on-Sea
This 23-acre farm and adventure park is one of the best toddler days out in North Somerset. Soft play, farm animals to meet and feed, crazy golf and plenty of outdoor space to roam. Ideal for the 18-months-to-4-years crew.
Greenbank Outdoor Pool splash park, Street
On a hot day, Greenbank Pool in Street is a fantastic toddler outing. The semi-circular shallow children’s pool is purpose-built for small ones, and the splash park play area has interactive water jets and spray fountains. It does get busy on hot days.
Hestercombe Gardens Alice trail, near Taunton
The Alice in Wonderland interactive trail at Hestercombe (23 July to 5 September) is beautifully pitched for little ones: follow Alice around the gardens, spot characters from the story and enjoy the sensory experience of these stunning grounds. Children go free alongside a paying adult.
Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, Wraxall
Noah’s Ark is one of the best toddler days out in North Somerset. The farm animals are accessible and friendly, the play areas suit all ages and the Noah’s Bay seaside zone (running all summer) adds a lovely splash element. Book at least seven days in advance for 20% off peak prices.
Somerset and Dorset Railway, Midsomer Norton
Toddlers who love trains (is there any other kind?) will be in their element on the vintage Wickham trolley rides running every Wednesday throughout the summer holidays. Short, manageable and genuinely charming: a lovely first heritage railway experience for small people.
Outdoor swimming in Somerset summer holidays
When the temperature rises, Somerset has some brilliant outdoor swimming options to help you cool off.
Greenbank Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool, Street
A sizeable 30m by 12m pool with a shallow, semi-circular kids’ pool, plus a splash park play area with interactive features like water jets and spray fountains. Heated and well-maintained: check Greenbank Pool for opening times and session booking. Warning: it gets very busy on hot days.
Clevedon Marine Lake, Clevedon
One of the best-loved outdoor swims in North Somerset, Clevedon Marine Lake is a tidal seawater lake on the Bristol Channel. It’s free to use, stunning in sunshine and popular with families for paddling and wild swimming. Combine with a walk along the seafront and an ice cream from one of the seafront cafes.
Weston-super-Mare beach
When the tide is right, Weston’s wide sandy beach is a fine option for a paddle. The sea at Weston can be choppy and the tide goes out a long way, so check tide times before you go. Pair it with the Grand Pier for a proper seaside day.
Minehead beach and Butlins Splash Waterworld
Butlins Minehead playground SKYPARK has been designed for inclusivity and interactivity for children up to 12 years old. There are sensory surprises at every turn, with six different zones, wheelchair-accessible features and after-dark illuminations.
If you’re not planning on staying at Butlins any time soon, it is possible to access the playground on a day pass, which cost around £14 per adult and £10 per child aged between 2-14. You’ll also be able to visit the fairgrounds, Splash Waterworld, flumes and rapids, soft play areas, outdoor play areas, arcades, restaurants, PLAYXPERIENCE and a range of bookable activities.

Wookey Hole Caves, near Wells
The caves stay a constant 11 degrees year-round, which is either refreshing in summer or a very good reason to bring a layer. Beyond the spectacular underground chambers, Wookey Hole has a fairground, circus skills arena, soft play, a mirror maze and a dinosaur valley trail.
Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton
Largely under cover and fascinating for all ages. The Concorde Experience, aircraft carriers and interactive exhibits keep children engaged for hours, and the weekly themed Concorde workshops running throughout the summer holidays make repeat visits worth it. The Helicopter Museum, Weston-super-Mare

Monster truck mayhem, daredevil stunt shows and awesome rides: watch Swamp Thing crush cars, catch freestyle motocross flips and admire jaw-dropping trucks of all shapes and sizes. A Big Day Out: Shoemakers Museum first birthday, Street
Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, 10am to 3pm: A Big Day Out at Shoemakers Museum celebrates the museum’s first birthday with donkey rides, a petting zoo, live music, crafts, Punch and Judy, inflatables and a scavenger hunt. Watchet Summertime 2026
Watchet Summertime (17-22 August 2026) brings a week of free family-friendly entertainment, activities and community events to the Somerset coast. The festival includes craft activities, competitions, live entertainment, street stalls, evening events and a spectacular fireworks finale.

Truckfest 2026 is roaring into Somerset’s Royal Bath and West Showground on 29-30 August 2026! Since 1983, this high-octane showdown has been wowing crowds with monster truck mayhem, daredevil stunt shows, and awesome rides – and this year’s no different. Under 5s go free and camping is available too. Expect thrills, fun, and a whole lotta horsepower.
Mendip Mini Fests 2026
Spread across 250 acres of Somerset countryside, Mendip Activity Centre has evolved the popular Mendip Family Festival into six family-friendly festival weekends throughout the summer holidays (24 July to 30 August), all included for campers at the award-winning Mendip Basecamp at no extra charge.
Fridays kick off with storytelling and live music. Saturdays bring outdoor workshops from 9am, face painting and local talent competitions, with headline bands in the evening. Sundays are for recovery: family yoga and circus skills workshops. Plus you can bolt on over 20 outdoor activities including tobogganing, archery, climbing, snow sports and caving.

Garden Theatre Festival 2026, Holburne Museum, Bath
The Garden Theatre Festival returns to the Holburne Museum this July for its fifth year, with four weeks of open-air theatre in one of Bath’s most beautiful settings.
- 19 July: The Big Bad Wolf, a lively rock and roll fairytale for ages 5+
- 2 to 12 July: Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest
- 14 to 26 July: Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility

Two magical outdoor theatre nights in Cannington’s Church Street this August. First up is Shakespeare’s enchanting comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 6 August, followed by family adventure The Sword in the Stone on 12 August: perfect for older children discovering the Arthurian legends. Where to stay for a Somerset summer holiday

For families who want festival vibes with a bed: Mendip Basecamp, North Somerset
I’ve stayed at Mendip Basecamp with my girls and loved it. The Mendip Mini Fests programme (see above) means there’s structured entertainment across the summer holidays, and with 20+ outdoor activities on the doorstep you could happily spend a week here without venturing out at all. East Quay, Watchet: for a coastal base with bags of character
If you’re timing your visit around Watchet Summertime (17 to 22 August), staying right in Watchet is the obvious move, and East Quay is the most special place to do it. The accommodation pods sit above the gallery and restaurant right on the harbourside, with views across to Exmoor and the Bristol Channel. It’s arty, intimate and genuinely unlike anywhere else in Somerset. The restaurant is brilliant too, so you’re sorted for evenings without having to drive anywhere.
Yeabridge Farm Hideaway, South Somerset: for glamping near NT country
Tucked away at the end of a South Somerset hamlet, Yeabridge Farm Hideaway has seven unique spaces: four yurts, a safari tent, a shepherd’s hut and a converted Canadian bus. It’s a beautifully run, quietly special place that makes a brilliant base for exploring the surrounding countryside, strolling out for dinner at the local pub and campfires under the stars. The kids will love waking up in a yurt and the grown-ups will love how peaceful it is once bedtime rolls around.
Hadspen Glamping, near Castle Cary: for a luxury wildcamp near The Newt
Hidden in a five-acre amphitheatre-style field with rolling hills and sheep for neighbours, Hadspen Glamping offers three safari-style lodges with hot tubs. It’s the kind of place where the children spend the whole holiday outside and you end up sitting in the hot tub watching them burn off energy! The Newt in Somerset is right on the doorstep, Bruton is ten minutes away and the surrounding countryside is stunning walking territory.
42 Acres, Bruton: for a summer retreat with a difference
Not a traditional family hotel but something rather more interesting: 42 Acres is a wellbeing retreat and regenerative farm set in 42 acres of Somerset countryside. Frome and its excellent restaurants are nearby.
