Queens Arms Corton Denham Ridge pub walk 1.9 miles

If you’re a fan of a good walk topped off with stunning countryside views (and a pint at the end!), this one’s a must for your list. My husband and I have been on a mission to locate the best family-friendly pub walks in Somerset recently and this gem had been sitting on my wish list for ages! With the frosty sunshine we’ve been blessed with lately, January seemed like the perfect time to finally give this Queens Arms Corton Denham pub walk a go.
And my goodness me, what a corker this walk turned out to be! Scoring a solid 10/10 from all of us (even the little’uns professed enjoyment), for scenic views, length of walk and top-notch, five star country pub, The Queens Arms at the finish line. With a roaring fire during the chilly months and a fabulous beer garden for sunny days, it’s perfect year-round. Their chips (and cider!) were the cherry on top and if you were to stay for one of their roasts or pub meals, well you won’t be disappointed. A cracking day out!

Map of Corton Denham walk
On all the Somerset family walks featured, I have used the OS Maps app, but it’s a good idea to have an Ordnance Survey paper map as well (Somerset isn’t renowned for its phone signal!). For this walk you need the OS Explorer Map Explorer 129 Yeovil & Sherborne or OS Map Explorer 183/Landranger 183 Yeovil & Frome.
The route below follows an anti-clockwise direction starting at the purple pin marker and finishing at the purple flag sign – The Queens Arms pub.

Corton Denham Walk Instructions
1. Start Point: Park on the lane opposite the Queen’s Arms pub in Corton Denham. Be sure to keep in as much as possible so passing cars can get past.

2. If you are standing and facing the pub, turn left (with your back to the visible church) and walk for a short way along Putt’s Lane, keeping an eye out for the public footpath signs.
3. After a short distance you will spot a metal gate on the left hand side of the road leading into a field. Go through the gate. This will take you uphill through open fields.
4. Ascend Gently: Follow the marked path uphill, staying on the designated route and following the yellow footpath markers.

5. Keep going up until you reach the top of the hill, then bend round to the left, (pausing to take in the incredible panoramic views of the Somerset countryside!).

6. Follow the Ridge Path: Walk along the ridge path on the top of the hill towards The Beacon trig point (196m high). The path here is well-marked and the views are breathtaking.

7. After The Corton Denham Beacon Trig point, head downhill. Parrock Hill will be visible in front of you. When you reach the bottom, head round to the left to walk along the bottom of the ridge, in the opposite direction to the way that you came. There were cows in this field when we did this walk, but they were very uninterested in us.

8. You will go through a gate into a second field. Keep following the path straight ahead until you see a couple of gates on the other side of the field.

9. Go through the left hand side gate which has a rope around it and leads downhill through the trees to the road (the path was a tiny stream when we walked this).

10. Turn left when you reach the road and walk along the road back to the Queen’s Arms Pub, passing the church on your left as you go.
11. Conclude your walk back at the Queen’s Arms pub for a well-deserved refreshment or meal.
