Father’s Day: history and transport Somerset days out

History Live at The Bishop’s Palace

A stone’s throw from Wells Cathedral, and no less enchanting, is the beautiful Bishop’s Palace with its 14 acres of gardens and shady well pools (the very waters which gave the city its name), hidden behind a moat and ancient ramparts.

If Pops is a bit of a history buff, you’ll want to mark your calendars for History Live at The Bishop’s Palace. The perfect dose of fun, learning, and a little time-travel adventure, this immersive weekend, taking place from June 14–15, will see characters bringing history to life inside the Grade II* listed gardens.

Surrounded by the atmospheric, medieval palace and ruined Great Hall, visitors will be swept through key moments in history via dramatic, live re-enactments, complete with authentic costumes and expert demonstrations.

In addition to the captivating displays, there will also be a medieval banquet on June 14, 2025. Treat Dad to a feast fit for a king, inspired by centuries-old culinary traditions. Pre-booking is required for this unique dining experience, so be sure to secure your spot for a Father’s Day meal.

Haynes Motor Museum

Home to the UK’s largest collection of cars and motorbikes, among the gleaming bodywork you’ll find an eclectic selection of vintage classics, grand American wagons, British marques and an entire room of iconic red motors.

The new Somerset-themed Scalextric track lets you race toy cars past county landmarks like the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage. Little ones can shuffle themselves around in Little Tikes cars (first come, first served) and play in the outdoor ‘road system’ playground, while older kids can tackle the Explorer Trail and whizz around on coin-operated go-karts. Tickets last for 12 months.

Join the Buy & Sell Autojumble on Saturday 14 June 2025, 9am–3pm. Browse or trade motoring parts, tools, and memorabilia. Entry is £5 (under 16s free), located in the Show Field—perfect for collectors, hobbyists, and motoring fans.

Go Glamping in Somerset

Somerset does Glamping sites particularly well. With rural countryside and spectacular scenery, there is a wealth of places to choose from that are perfect for families to reconnect with nature, nurture little outdoor enthusiasts and even get a bit of adult relaxation. With June’s warm weather, it’s an excellent time to go.

I’ve picked out a few outstanding ones in the county, where you can watch youngsters gambolling round green fields by day, and cosy up beside the fire, feasting on hot chocolate by dark starry night. Check them out here.

Pub walks

Take Dad for a good stomp in the countryside, then end up at a great Somerset boozer. If you haven’t managed to book in for a Fathering Sunday roast, then most of these walks end up at lovely watering holes that will happily serve you a pint and a side of chips to keep you going.

And if watching your kids racing around the playground while you relax with a tipple in a pub garden sounds like the best kind of Father’s Day, check out these 7 Somerset pubs with play areas.
